Description:

Our Pearls of Samarkand Very Cherry Berry Raisin Mix is an exquisite combination of the best fruits, berries and raisins. Each ingredient has its own special nutrient content.

Packed full of energy and power!

Cherries contain anthocyanins, specifically, the substance cyanidin.

„Anthocyanins have an antioxidant effect that can exceed the benefits provided by vitamin C and vitamin E by a multiple factor, at least in vitro. … They bind free radicals in the body, protecting DNA, lipids and carbohydrates from damage. More positive effects ascribed to anthocyanins: they are said to improve the sight, inhibit inflammation and protect the vessels“.

Cherries have an antioxidant capacity of around 3356 µmol TE (ORAC value = Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity).

Some of the substances contained in raisins are called antioxidants, which prevent unwanted oxidation from taking place in our bodies. This is why they are also known as free radical scavengers. Their action slows down the cells‘ ageing process, and reduces the effects of a number of diseases. The amino acids active in raisins, in particular valine, threonine, lysine, leucine and histidine are also beneficial to health.

Raisins have a very high antioxidant capacity of 10450 µmol TE (ORAC value = Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity).

Dried Inca berries (physalis) contain considerable quantities of vitamin A (important for sight, the metabolism and the skin), C (antioxidant) and B3 (niacin) and high levels of iron too. Analyses have been made of the pits, showing that they contain omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids, phytosterols / phytostanols such as  β-sitosterol, campesterol, vitamin K and beta-carotines. The phytosterols have a positive effect on the intestine’s cholesterol level, since they prevent it being absorbed from food.

Goji berries are heavily represented in health food and/or anti-ageing product sectors, and are part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). They supply us with energy, and are said to support the cardiovascular system, strengthen the immune system, alleviate problems caused by high blood pressure and insomnia, provide optimal cell protection, neutralise damage caused by free radicals and last but not least, „help to combat premature aging caused by stress and environmental factors”. 10 to 20 grammes of dried fruits are recommended daily.

Goji berries contain high levels of iron, fibre, vitamin A and C as well as having an antioxidant capacity of 3173 µmol TE (ORAC value). Dried goji berries have the same vital substances and nutrients as fresh berries, only in a concentrated form.

In Eastern Europe, the aronia berry is regarded as a medicinal plant and has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It is reputed to inhibit inflammation, to strengthen the body’s defence mechanisms and to protect cells, tissue and vessels. The berry is also said to improve blood circulation and regulate blood pressure.

Amongst other substances, aronia berries contain flavonoids, vitamin C and fibre. They are often called the good health berry.

Blueberries, or bilberries, as they are also called, are full of secondary plant substances such as:  tannins, anthocyanins, flavonoids, and also fruit acids, pectin and invert sugar. The fruits are also rich in vitamin C and fibre.

Bilberries are used in a variety of ways in traditional medicine. Both the raw dried fruits and dried leaves are used. The berries are reputed to help relieve diarrhoea, inflammation of the mouth, throat and gums, bladder weakness and high cholesterol levels, as well as strengthening blood vessels and lowering blood sugar levels.

Barberries have been used as a remedy for digestive complaints and high temperatures for over 2,500 years. The berries are used in modern medicine to treat diseases of the gall bladder and  heartburn.

New research has discovered that barberries have an anti-microbial effect on parasites and bacteria, and properties inhibiting inflammation and reducing blood pressure. The berries are also said to have a calming effect, which could help to alleviate cramp.

Barberries were used in traditional medicine stewed or as jam to prevent constipation or to stimulate the appetite.
