Pumpkin seeds are frequently used as a remedy for hair loss in men and for an enlarged prostate, as they contain the hormone dihydrotesterone. Their significant magnesium content and highly beneficial oleic and fatty acids can help the body to alleviate disorders such as kidney stones, arthritis and skin problems. Pumpkin seeds also have high levels of magnesium, iron and vitamin E [1 and 2].
Austrian pumpkin farmers cultivate two types of pumpkin – winter pumpkins such as edible pumpkins and giant pumpkins, and summer pumpkins including garden, oil and decorative pumpkins. Our pumpkin seeds are from the Styrian oil pumpkin. This variety is a mutant in which the outer layer of seed cells is neither woody nor thickened. This makes the seeds very nice to eat and gives them their characteristic olive green to dark green colour. The Styrian oil pumpkin has been cultivated for around 100 years.
